JamesAllen.com: For Men - 6 Ways to Nail the Engagement Ring
ENGAGEMENT RINGS, SOLITAIRE, DIAMONDS, PLATINUM, GOLD
This is a blog post I was asked to write as part of the recruitment process for a position at JamesAllen.com.
There comes a time in every man’s life when he knows he has found the “one”. For most guys, the purchase of their special lady’s engagement ring is the first experience in the intricate world of fine jewelry. Outside of buying a house or a car, this will likely be the biggest purchase of your life.
Navigating through the planning of this defining moment can seem to only add to the enormity of the decision itself, yet it doesn’t have to be. Gentlemen, fear not! For we are here to help guide you find the best “bling for your buck”, with an engagement ring so fine not even Cleopatra herself would say “no” to you.
1. HOW MUCH SHOULD I SPEND?
This is the part which will guide all your decision making, therefore it's important to have a grip on how much you're looking to spend. Whether you decide to dip into your savings, or put it on your credit card, it is important to know what’s manageable. Saving up for the ring is another option, although we would advise holding off telling anyone about it since not everyone can keep a secret for too long.
You’ve probably heard the “three months salary” rule which suggests you should spend three months wages on your bride-to-be’s engagement ring. However, we both know bad boys like you understand rules were only made to be broken.
2. PLAN WELL AHEAD
Finding the right engagement ring takes time, so it’s important to give yourself plenty of time to make a well thought out decision. Even after you’ve made your choice, the time it takes to receive your chosen ring, once all customization is taken into account, can take anywhere from six-weeks to three-months. Keeping this in mind, you could use the wait to plan the proposal itself! ;)
3. GO BIG OR GO ONLINE
One non-traditional way to buy your engagement ring is to look online. The total savings a person can make on average ranges from 30-50% compared to a regular store. James Allen for example, offers a plethora of options that ensures you will definitely find the one ring to rule them all. Allowing you to customize your ring from start to finish, with a lifetime warranty, with James Allen there has never been a better time to buy your engagement ring online.
One of the most understated advantages of purchasing online is that you will not be pressured into buying something due to a lack of visible options a physical shop is hindered by, or let’s admit it, a pushy salesperson. Added to this is how James Allen’s state-of-the-art technology allows you to inspect diamonds more closely and with greater scrutiny than any shop offers. Just see for yourself.
4. FIND OUT HER RING SIZE
Arguably the trickiest part of purchasing an engagement ring is figuring out your girlfriend’s ring size. You want the ring to fit her when you propose after all! Keep an eye on which ring she wears on her ring finger and then take a piece of paper and pencil when she’s not there to trace the circumference of the ring. Alternatively, you could secretly borrow one of her rings.
James Allen offers a free online ring sizer to help you determine your ring size. You can use it to measure a drawn piece of paper or measure the ring you borrowed. Both are accurate and will give you the exact ring size.
A useful tip to keep in mind is that it’s much easier to size down than size up, so you’d be better off going with an engagement ring size that is bigger rather than smaller. At James Allen we offer one free ring resizing within 60 days of purchase, so don’t stress too much if you can’t find her exact ring size.
5. WHICH “C” CAN/CAN’T YOU SACRIFICE?
For the Dapper Dons among you, you might be well acquainted with the Four C’s. For the more laid-back ones, the Four C’s are the cut, color, carat and clarity of a diamond. Knowing how to balance the Four C’s will help you find the perfect stone for your budget. Though each of the C’s is important; some have greater influence than others.
The C which allows you the greatest flexibility is clarity. We recommend the lowest clarity grade anyone should go down to is VS1, as anything less would be visible to the naked eye. The other C to consider fine tuning is the carat size. Choosing a diamond a touch below industry cutoff points can equal a significantly reduced price tag, such as choosing one that is a 0.97-carat diamond as opposed to one that is a 1.0-carat diamond.
The C which should never be compromised is the cut. Why, you may ask? Well, cut is what determines how sparkly the stone is. Trust us when we say no woman on Earth will ever tell you she wants her ring to sparkle less. Thus, investing in an excellent cut ensures maximum brilliance and gives that razzle-dazzle to the engagement ring. If she’s got it she’ll definitely flaunt it, fellas.
6. THE TYPE, THE SETTING & THE METAL
Solitaire? Platinum? Eternity band? We know how stressful this whole process can be, so here’s one last tip you need to take into account: the ring itself. How do you want your chosen stone to look on her immaculate finger? There are three things to consider: the ring type, the stone setting, and the metal.
The ring type is best determined by how you want the stone presented. Simply put, this is purely a matter of taste and comes down to the stone you’ve chosen. A little tip if you’ve gone with a smaller stone is to set it in a halo ring (i.e., a center stone surrounded by smaller diamonds ) as size and brilliance increases disproportionality to the dollars spent.
Along with considering the ring type, you will need to determine the ring setting of the stone. This is best decided on the type of lifestyle your significant other lives, as function here is just as important as form. For example, a woman who uses her hands for her job may find a prong or twist setting to be a hindrance, whereas a bezel or bar setting would sit snuggly on her.
Finally, settling on the right ring metal for your engagement ring is a key part of the ring process. Choosing between white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum is equal parts budget and taste. Yellow gold for example does not corrode, tarnish or rust, which means it can be counted on to provide lasting beauty. Platinum on the other hand is the ideal metal choice for people with metal or contact allergies as it rarely causes an allergic reaction.
Whether it’s classy or chic, functional or fabulous, there’s an engagement ring out there for every Prince Charming. You might feel exhausted by the time you need to plan the proposal. But don’t forget planning the proposal is (almost) as important as buying the ring itself, so make it count. But remember, the proposal might last a day, but diamonds are forever. ;)
